Join us February 26th at 11:00 AM (ET) for a virtual Café for Care Partners. After you register, we will send you the Zoom link and instructions.

Please note: this event requires you to gather some supplies, read on to learn more.

Café for Care Partners is designed especially for the care partners of people living with dementia to provide engaging, stimulating experiences and relief from the daily grind.

Susan Morgan is back by popular demand!

Have you ever noticed the waterlily flowers and lily pads that float effortlessly along the water surface of a summertime pond at your favorite botanic garden? Inspired by this natural beauty, let’s make our own floating nature-based arrangements using flowers, leaves, stems, and other nature objects from around the home. This is a fun and meaningful way to enhance nature walks and views around your home and showcase ephemeral beauties from your garden and indoor plants all season long. Participants will be invited to share the materials they have and/or their finished artwork during the session, if desired.

Susan Morgan has a master’s degree in Public Horticulture and a certificate in Horticultural Therapy. Her mission is to cultivate the connection between people and plants for restorative well-being. At eat|breathe|garden (formerly The Horticultural Link), Susan engages participants with hands-on, plant-based activities through her social and therapeutic horticulture programs – in person and virtually. She lives and gardens at 8500 feet in the foothills west of Denver, Colorado.

Please see the supply list below:

– Clipped plant materials, such as assorted flowers, leaves, stems, small twigs, other nature materials, at least 3 (or more!) different clippings – these may include plant parts collected from houseplants or outdoor plants from the garden. Or, you can purchase cut flowers from your local florist or pull leftover materials out of an existing floral arrangement. Flowers that have a flat back (think: mums or daisies) or flowers that can be dissected for petals and other flower parts are ideal. For added fun, collect and experiment with a variety of nature materials, preferably with contrasting and complementary colors and textures, for added creative expression. Plant options to consider: mums, daisies, alstroemeria, grass blades (with non-sharp edges), fern, begonia, geranium, tradescantia, and much more.

– Bowl, shallow dish, or other water-holding vessel for the tabletop, should be leakproof and hold enough water for floating plant materials. The larger the vessel, the more space you will have for your designwork. A bowl with a dark bottom will have a better reflection, and plant materials will “show” better than in vessels with a lighter or clear bottom.

– Water, enough to fill your vessel at least halfway full and have a depth at which plant materials will float.

– Scissors for cutting stems and plant parts

– Optional, tweezers for picking up and moving plant materials

– Optional, hand towel for wiping fingers or spilled water

– Optional, camera, phone camera, or similar for taking a photo of the finished floating design

Note: If gathering supplies for someone else, opt for non-toxic, non-skin-irritating plant materials.

At the Intersection of FTD and the Law

Brief Description of Event: FTD can present with executive dysfunction, impulsivity, loss of empathy, apathy, and disinhibition. At times, these symptoms can lead to interactions with police, whether responding to an incident at home or in the community, resulting in an arrest. This webinar will highlight what we know about the incidence of these interactions, discuss which FTD symptoms are most commonly associated, and answer questions about criminal responsibility and competency for those living with FTD.
Learners will be able to:
• Recognize the incidence of law enforcement interactions with those with FTD as compared to other dementias.
• List the types of behavioral variant FTD symptoms that can lead to a response by law enforcement.
• Recognize the issues around competency and diminished capacity as they relate to legal or criminal responsibility of those with FTD.

If you cannot attend live, this presentation will be recorded and archived on our website within one week of broadcast.
CMEs and CECs will only be available for those who watch the webinar live.

Guest Presenter: Ryan Darby, MD, is chief of the Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Neurology, director of the Frontotemporal Dementia Clinic, and an assistant professor of neurology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University and trained in neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital. He then received the Sidney R. Baer, Jr. Research Fellowship in Clinical Neurosciences at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He simultaneously completed a clinical fellowship in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, and McLean Psychiatric Hospital in Boston.

About the Event
Join us Friday May 9th 10:00AM-11:30AM (EDT) for a special In-Person Café for Care Partners at Woodmere Art Museum

Philadelphia-based mural and multi-media artist Marta Sanchez shares with us the joyful Mexican tradition of “cascarones” in this very special Café for Care Partners hosted at Woodmere Art Museum. Join us in marking the renewal of spring and the lead-up to Mother’s Day!

Marta will guide us in decorating eggshells that she has painstakingly filled with confetti as we use everything from paint to markers to glitter and give free rein to our creativity. In addition to spending some lighthearted time in the company of other care partners, you will go home with the egg(s) you have decorated and, if you choose, participate in the playful tradition of gently cracking the eggshells over the heads of those you love, bringing them good luck as the confetti spills out from the eggshells.

We launched this series of programs especially for the care partners of people living with dementia (usually family members but sometimes close friends playing the same role) to provide engaging, stimulating experiences and relief from the daily grind.

Admission is free with RSVP! But we ask that you make your reservation(s) as early as possible. Reservations are first come, first served.

Accessibility, transit and parking:
Woodmere Art Museum is wheelchair accessible, and there is parking onsite.
The Museum is also accessible via public transit:
By train: From 30th Street Station, Center City Philadelphia, take the R8 Chestnut Hill West train to the end of the line. This leaves you on Germantown Avenue. Go left up Germantown Ave. for about 1 mile to Woodmere (on your right).
By bus: The L bus will take you from the Chestnut Hill West train station to within a 3 minute walk of Woodmere’s doors. Visit septa.org to find updated schedules and information.

About the Event
Join us June 26th at 2:30 PM (ET) for an in-person Café for Care Partners at Chanticleer. After you register, we will send you information and instructions.

Join us at Chanticleer for a calming nature walk. Enjoy a self-guided tour of Chanticleer’s unique gardens.

Chanticleer is considered one of the most unique gardens in the United States. The garden is a study of textures and forms, where foliage trumps flowers, the gardeners lead the design, and even the drinking fountains are sculptural. It is a garden of pleasure and learning, relaxing yet filled with ideas to take home. Each area of the park is designed and maintained by one of seven horticulturists and each one is continually evolving from year to year and season to season. Each garden has its own feel, yet all are joined together as one harmonious unit.

Admission is Free with RSVP! But we ask that you make your reservation(s) as early as possible. We keep our programs small and intimate in scale so that everyone feels comfortable and at ease. Reservations are first come, first served.

Transportation, Parking, and Accessibility
Chanticleer is wheelchair accessible. A one-mile paved path navigates the garden’s 35-acres with benches strategically situated throughout. Topography through parts of the garden is hilly, which can make pushing a wheelchair challenging. When we arrive, Visitor Services staff will be available to suggest routes that avoid the hilly parts of the garden.
Accessible parking spaces will be reserved for us. Reserved accessible parking is available near the entrance. Guests may drop off passengers near the front desk, using the traffic circle as you enter the parking area.

Chanticleer Garden is located 1.4 miles from the Wayne Train Station on the R5 Thorndale / Paoli Line. After departing the train, it is recommended to use a taxi or ride share app to get to Chanticleer.
